Nonprofit Action Tank Creates Its Own Funding Source
From the Client
Thank you for pushing us out of our comfort zone and helping us see the possibilities! We would have never been able to see the true value of ourĀ program -- and actually sell it -- without your business acumen and creative thinking.

The Challenge
Port Jobs is a nonprofit research and action tank that designs economic development programs for other organizations. After 10 years of serving the community, they found that no one knew who they were. They were excellent program designers, but found it difficult to tell their story and market their programs.
The Strategy
The relationship between Port Jobs and TsuluWerks began with the design of a 10th Anniversary report and graphics for an anniversary celebration. TsuluWerks was charged with capturing their message visually and delivering their value proposition to key stakeholders.
On rare occasions, they choose to implement their own economic development programs. TsuluWerks designed a logo for their Airport Jobs program and worked with the team to brand and produce materials for their Financial Tools for the Trades program.
The success of their Financial Tools for the Trades program led to nationwide demand for the program. In late 2008/early 2009, the team at Port Jobs recognized that grand and donor funding was difficult to secure during the economic recession. Chief Strategist of TsuluWerks, Tracy Corley, recognized the value of the intellectual property developed by the team and suggested that they sell the program to fill the financial gap. As a result, TsuluWerks developed a business plan for selling the workshops and materials through Train the Trainer programs. TsuluWerks worked closely with the client team and the National Endowment for Financial Education to develop promotional materials for the program. As of writing, a new e-commerce-enabled web site is under development to sell the program to active, interested apprenticeship programs across North America.
The Results
Port Jobs has been able to preserve and expand programs during a time when many organizations are scaling back, cutting jobs, and closing their doors. They have the messages and tools they need to promote their programs to potential funders and delivery channels.
